Perennial and native species of plants are good for planting on a garden, flower bed or xeroscape garden where low water requirements are a must. Not all of these plants will work in all areas and each have their own special characteristics.

Salvia greggii is a herbaceous perennial native to a long, narrow area from southwest Texas, through the Chihuahuan Desert and into the Mexican state of San Luis Potosi, typically growing in rocky soils. Salvia greggii does well in full sun and forms a large bush that is usually not bothered by deer.

Deer will also not bother this Salvia.

Caesalpinia pulcherrima is a species of flowering plant in the pea family, Fabaceae, native to the tropics and subtropics of the Americas. Pride of Barbados is an evergreen shrub or small tree in frost free climates, a deciduous shrub in zone 9, and a returning perennial in zone 8. In the tropics it gets 15-20′ tall and its ungainly, wide spreading branches can cover about the same width.

This cultivar is a showy plant with dense clusters of arching long, broad leaves colored purplish red. Like the other colorful Cordyline australis cultivars this plant should grow to be a branched 10 to 20 foot tall by 5 to 10 foot wide evergreen tree and produces large panicles of small, sweet-scented flowers in late spring to summer. Best in full coastal sun to light shade – some shade protection necessary in hotter inland gardens. It is drought tolerant in coastal gardens but responds well to occasional to regular irrigation. RUSSIAN SAGE ( Perovskia atriplicifolia )

Russian sage is a herbaceous perennial bush that grows 2 – 4 ft tall and grows in a wide range of climates. Russian sage has a distinct smell to the leaves when crushed. It is highly deer resistant and its blooms attract bees and butterflies.
MEXICAN FIREBUSH ( Hamelia patens )

Mexican firebush, also called hummingbird plant, is a tropical shrub native in tropical climates around the Gulf of Mexico, Mexico, south Florida, parts of South and Central America and some Caribbean Islands. It likes full sun and the leaves will turn red with direct sunlight. A perennial in zones 8 – 11, it will come back from the roots every year. It also attracts pollinators.
